Guest speakers Alayne Bickle (www.horsesforcleanwater.com) USA & Jane Myers (www.equiculture.com.au)

Australia places a high cultural heritage value on the horse, from the Melbourne Cup to the opening of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.

Australia’s horse industry has a healthy diversity – racing, breeding, equestrian sports, stock horses, and pleasure owners to name just a few. There are many levels of engagement, interaction and involvement with a passion for horses and an interest the keeping of horses in common.

Australia is unique in that people are often geographically distant. The expanse of our country means that Australian horse owners face a variety of different environmental conditions affecting horse keeping practices, often at quite a local level.

A particular challenge is the shift is in the rapid growth which sees small property developments pushing into traditional broad acre agriculture and bush landscapes. These “new” land holders are frequently not from traditional rural backgrounds, have little access to standard agricultural equipment or in fact, see themselves as farmers at all. Yet many now find themselves as small property managers, passionate about horses and wanting learn more.

Horse owners talk about weeds, dust, mud and emerging diseases. Scientists and natural resource managers talk about water quality, biodiversity and climate impacts. Yet we are all talking about the same thing.

The aim of this event is to bring a variety of people together to translate and exchange knowledge about sustainable horse keeping practices & knowledge in both directions – from the researcher ”down” and grass roots “up”!
